Memory Care

Almost like an episode of Leave it to Beaver.

Mom was as routine as you could get. Each morning she was up by six, took her shower, got ready for the day (even if she wasn’t going anywhere) and always had breakfast ready for Dad promptly at 7:00 am. Every morning, the same thing awaited Dad at the breakfast table; two eggs over easy, a piece of toast, three strips of bacon and a fresh cup of hot coffee. We’d always joke that my parents were taken right out of an episode of Leave it to Beaver.

It was the small things at first.

At first it was the little things that Dad started noticing. Like, she’d forget to toast the bread in the morning or would forget where she put her glasses – even though they have been in the same place for 30 years. And from time to time, she would forget their new neighbor’s names or how to get to the grocery and my house.

When Dad would ask if she was feeling ok, she would just laugh it off and chalk it up to getting old. However, we knew that it was much more than “just getting old” when these things became more of a constant than an oversight.

The day we will never forget.

Mom always went grocery shopping on Tuesday mornings, leaving the house at 9 am and returning at right around 11 am. You could almost set your watch to her routine. However, the day she didn’t come home on time, is a day we will never forget.

Thankfully, the police and some very kind strangers, who lived 200 miles away from her hometown, were able to get her safely back home. They said she was so frightened when they found her just driving up and down their street. She said that she couldn’t remember how to get home from the grocery, so she just kept driving. She ended up in a small subdivision that she said looked a lot like her street, but she couldn’t find her house.

A difficult decision, but the right one.

After that day, we weren’t able to ever leave Mom alone again. Between Dad and us girls, we were able to care for her for almost 10 years in her own home. However, the day came when we just couldn’t care for her anymore. It became a safety issue for both her and Dad to keep her at home any longer. That’s when we found Mulberry and their Memory Care.

Dad spends most of his days talking with her and listening to her stories of what he knew her life to be long ago. To her, most of the time, the past is her present. Dad still loves to see her swoon over the handsome soldier, named Bob, that she danced the night away with – just a few nights ago. Dad says that she just glows when talking about him – which makes him grin ear to ear.

We felt like we were abandoning her.

Thanks to Memory Care, Mom is comfortable, well taken care of and most of all safe. The nurses and care staff work with Mom each day to assist her in retaining as many current memories as she can. When we visit and she can recall our names, just like nothing is wrong, I think the staff may be more excited that we are. We all cherish these moments and hold on to them as long as we can.

The care staff at Memory Care are wonderful people, support towers and friends – not only to Mom, but to our entire family. At first, we felt like we were abandoning Mom when we decided she needed more care than we could give. But they have helped us to understand that she is truly happy here and that they work hard to ensure she (and we) have as many good days as we can have with her.

Alzheimer’s is a horrific disease that has taken Mom away from us a little at a time over the past 12 years. But thanks to the support that we all get from the Memory Care staff, we understand the progress and stages of this disease. It is so helpful to have friends like Mom’s caregivers to help us through this very emotional time. We have incredible peace of mind knowing that she is in a loving and safe environment, among friends.
